Vancouver Riot – June 15-16-17 – 2011

The 2011 Stanley Cup riot was a public disturbance that broke out in Downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on Wednesday, June 15, 2011, in the aftermath of the Boston Bruins winning the Stanley Cup over the Vancouver Canucks. The riots happened immediately after the conclusion of Boston’s 4–0 win over Vancouver in game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals, which clinched the Stanley Cup for Boston. In the riots, at least 140 people were injured (one critically), at least four people were stabbed and close to 100 people were arrested.

YouTube : RussiaToday : Angry, drunken revellers ran wild on Wednesday night after the Vancouver Canucks’ 4-0 loss to Boston in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals, setting cars and garbage cans ablaze, smashing windows, showering giant TV screens with beer bottles and dancing atop overturned vehicles. Later, looters smashed windows and ran inside department stores. There were no immediate indications of injuries, although images were shown on television of at least one woman mopping blood from her forehead. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson praised the police and firefighters and asked people to stay away from the central downtown area. Tear gas mingled with the stench of acrid smoke and stale beer as riot police, truncheons drawn, moved in to quell the violence, pushing crowds away from the burning cars. Later, police cars also were set on fire.

Rioters overturned and set fire to two vehicles in front of the main post office, and there were reports of similar car fires in a nearby car park. Windows were smashed in a department store, a bank and several other businesses. A man was taken to hospital with a head injury after he fell from the nearby Georgia Viaduct. Police say several fans wearing Canucks attire poured seven jerrycans filled with gasoline over a blackHonda Civic parked in front of the stadium. In a nearby parking lot, two Vancouver Police squad cars were also set on fire.

Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson attributed the situation to “a small group of troublemakers”. Vancouver Police Department chief Jim Chusaid that instigators appeared to be some of the same individuals involved in a protest on the opening day of the 2010 Winter Olympics, and that they came equipped with eye protection, gasoline and other tools. He called them “criminals and anarchists” who disguised themselves as fans.

CBC News has reported the destruction caused by the rioters was worse than the riot that followed the Canucks loss in Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals, particularly the looting aspect. Questions were being raised about an allegedly slow police response.
